A camp masterpiece. In the years since the movie's release, Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo has become a lesbian icon. Perhaps it is the ennui of 2020 talking, but seeing that soft butch pining for his wife from his outcast desert van life, I'm…

Many folks get caught up in the poetry of the Shakespearean tongue and think that his characters are always saying something deep or important, when really there was a lot of hilarious trash talk. This movie conveys the ridiculous and…

This Shakespeare adaptation will not be everyone's cup of tea, but for those who were the right age when it came out, Baz Luhrman's movie was their introduction to the tale of star-crossed lovers. Speaking of which, for a film that is over…

Shakespeare was meant to be adapted at this point in history. Every director is entitled to certain liberties - with how creative they can get and there seems to be no boundaries. My complaint with this movie is that if you're going to go…

Great movie about Shakespeare's tale set in modern times.

Two feuding households, a pair of star-crossed lovers, and a tragic ending: a film adaptation of a timeless story entitled William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet. While the visuals and Luhrmann’s interpretation are undeniably captivating, I…

Just rewatched this for the millionth time and I still love it. The fish tank scene! The pool scene! Mercutio! For something that takes place in 1990s California, this movie gets everything about Romeo and Juliet right (even more so than…

I love this show! After all these years of not seeing it once, since it came out, I can still recite most of the lines in this epic masterpiece! Never once cried while watching it, around when it came out in the mid-nineties, but broke…

This is a American adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet directed by Baz Luhrmann. The film is an abridged modernization of Shakespeare's play. While it retains the original Shakespearean dialogue, the Montagues and the…

I've watched this movie several times and have loved every time. It does have this strange mix of music video and Shakespearean dialogue. It works though.

Did watch to the end after considering bailing. Interesting, challenging change of context, some parts worked, some didn't (for me). High marks for DiCaprio.

is this DVD on extra-thick plastic or something? my only DVD player is my laptop, and I can't get this one to play at all. This is the 2nd copy I've tried from the HPL. The HPL security sticker on top makes it just thick enough that it…

I understand Baz Luhrmann's lofty ambitions here, but stretched and strained to fit the modern setting, this flashy adaptation remained unfulfilling. If interested in Shakespearean cinematic stylings, I would recommend watching Shakespeare…

The first rule of staging Shakespeare, for the stage or the screen: you must respect the words he wrote. It doesn't matter if you take the play out of its own time, but the text must be respected. Obviously that didn't happen here.…

This movie makes me cringe. It just doesn't work OK? That's right. Shakespearean language of centuries past does NOT work with modern-day rich and high people who live on a beach in America. Ugh. No it just doesn't. Why Baz Luhrmann…
