This local author (Port Townsend) makes us look good during his stay in China. He spent time in Taiwan at a monastery, speaks the language, and made a special trip to the mainland as part of his research that went into this book. While his style does meander a bit, the colorful descriptions of these outsiders and there environs instills the reader with a sense of calm and awe.
