Another beautifully-illustrated children's book from this author. You will not be able to resist snakes after this one. Again, wonderful for stimulating discussion about one of life's big lessons. Loved it.

We all grow up. In both physical ways, as well as in personality, Verdi does not want this change to occur though. In his efforts to remain childlike, and despite the warnings of his lazy elders, his rambunctious actions lead to an injury. It takes this unfortunate act, to finally make Verdi see how the adults were only trying to prevent him from being hurt like they were.

Once again, Cannon provides a combo-pack of a moral lesson wrapped in information about the animals. This time it is snakes, with additional information in the back.

Images have a slightly more humourous than realistic approach compared to Stellaluna. Verdi is often performing joyous aerial acrobatics with wide-mouthed expressions unnatural to snakes. Brilliant colours both maintain the true look of nature, and nicely contrast Verdi's yellow against the blue sky when he flies. Even when he finally turns green, he does not fade into the surroundings like the others. For even when he learns to be careful, he still retains some of his fun spirit. Growing up does not mean one has to completely abandon their childlike self.
