The bay owls came out of their house,
and they sat on the tree and waited.
A big branch for Sarah, a small branch for Percy,
and an old piece of ivy for Bill.

When three baby owls awake one night to find their mother gone, they can't help but wonder where she is. Stunning illustrations from unique and striking perspectives capture the owls as they worry about their mother: What is she doing? When will she be back? What scary things move all around them? Not surprisingly, a joyous flapping and dancing and bouncing greets her return, lending a celebratory tone to the ending of this comforting tale. Never has the plight of young ones who miss their mother been so simply told or so beautifully rendered.

This is a great books to read to preschoolers. It has simple text, beautiful illustrations, and a reassuring ending. Each of the three baby owls has a distinct personality.

This book is a modern classic for a reason. It’s a dramatic, yet simple telling of a story every child can relate to: waking up in the dark, finding mother is gone, and then the questions that arise from this situation. The art form of the picture book is realized here, with the use of carefully chosen text and beautiful illustrations combined for full effect. It's one of my all-time favourites.

This is a fairly basic story about three sibling owls waiting for their mother to return from a night of hunting. The illustrations were nice, however the story was not terribly exciting.

Three sibling owls wait for Mom to return from hunting. Children will empathize with the youngest, Bill, as he expresses "I want my Mommy!"
