Tautly narrated and excruciatingly suspenseful, Double Indemnity gives us an X-ray view of guilt, of duplicity, and of the kind of obsessive, loveless love that devastates everything it touches. First published in 1936, this novel reaffirmed James M. Cain as a virtuoso of the roman noir. Performed by James Naughton

Strictly for those who enjoy noir in its traditional form, as I do. A very quick read, no side-tracks, straight-ahead murder and skullduggery, complete with the requisite femme fatale. Written as if intended as basis for a film, which it indeed became.
The style is dated, the motivation of some of the characters sketchy, the sequence of events abrupt but that all goes with the genre.
