It was a classic film, but the dialogue is almost impossible to keep up with, and it is not historically accurate.

Hello commenters. This was a film that was a very new experience to me. I needed to watch it a second time, to really understand it.

With my first viewing, I found the themes disturbing ( the myth of Henry II's affair with Alyss.) I also was unable to grasp the message behind the film, and was overall unsure of what to make of it. I knew though that it was not historically accurate; so overall in this viewing, I was not enjoying it.

After it was explained to me that this was a genre called a dark comedy ( a kind of film I have never viewed before ). I watched the film again and found myself laughing very much at what the characters said; especially Eleanor. I began to understand how all of the characters were hiding under veils, to hide their true intentions from the other people. I still needed to have some explanation throughout the film about what was going on, but for the most part, I had a much clearer understanding of it.

Ah, yes. My favourite dark comedy film. Why wouldn't it be comedy? It makes me laugh most of the way through the movie. Yes, there is drama and good acting too but it definitely is a comedy, albeit dark, very dark.

At first it was hard for me to push past the historical realities to enjoy this film. After watching the movie more than once, you start to forget the historical inaccuracies and enjoy it more; seeing all the subtle touches in acting and symbolism.

Simply watch it as a dark comedy, laughing most of the way through and you won't be confused as the boat men in the last scene of the movie.

Are you surprised that Katherine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole could make a masterpiece of a film? Well, I am not, and the proof is in "The Lion in Winter". I didn't know myself that royalty was so educated in the middle ages. Thus the dialogue of the script is eloquent and well mannered. The two will renew your faith that movies can take you out of yourself and transpose you to another era. I hope you enjoy the journey as much as my family.

This 1968 historical drama features two of the biggest names in the film industry at that time, and the acting did not disappoint. However, I personally feel the story is probably more suited to be acted out on a stage.

Some of the best acting I have ever seen. Wow! Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn are jaw dropping. Great film.

A wonderful story and a great classic movie.

Another brilliant performance by Peter O'Toole at his lustiest (and sexiest), matched by a spirited Katharine Hepburn and a stellar supporting cast. One of the best films of the 1960s, fully deserving "classic" status.

Screen legends Katherine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole light up this film as warring monarchs who still adore one another. This stellar casts includes interestingly young Anthony Hopkins and Tim Dalton. A Hollywood classic.
