Bryan Talbot constructs a very special story in The Tale of One Bad Rat. The victim of child sexual abuse, Helen Potter becomes the armored knight before her own personal demons. It's a story of heroism and courage, and of defeating the greatest enemy--the one which lives within.

an outstanding novel, the best 'graphic' novel I've ever read, the characters rich, fully thought out and the use of Beatrix Potter's story to enrich the narrative is worthy of Beatrix Potter herself

The local color is outstanding, in both London and the North countries, and the strong story about a runaway abused teenage girl, is made all the stronger by interweaving itself with the life and work of Beatrix Potter.

This deceptively simple "comic book" hides it's true potential. Within it lies the full abilities of the best of art; expressing emotions, speaking out and healing.

While Bryan Talbot simply wanted to write a tail about a homeless girl, he also managed to tap into the ability to connect with others. He addresses a sensitive subject and encourages others not to hide in shame. Through the subtle and gentle illustrations he encourages us all to grow.

This encapsulates the power and potential of graphic novels to illustrate real issues in a way that resonates with the human spirit.

In addition, the drawings of her pet and the ensuing "Bat rat" tale inspired by Beatrix Potter are adorable.
