THE GREATEST FANTASY EPIC OF OUR TIME The Fellowship was scattered. Some were bracing hopelessly for war against the ancient evil of Sauron. Some were contending with the treachery of the wizard Saruman. Only Frodo and Sam were left to take the accursed Ring of Power to be destroyed in Mordor--the dark Kingdom where Sauron was supreme. Their guide was Gollum, deceitful and lust-filled, slave to the corruption of the Ring. Thus continues the magnificent, bestselling tale of adventure begun inThe Fellowship of the Ring, which reaches its soul-stirring climax inThe Return of the King. From the Paperback edition.

Rob Inglis does a superb job of narrating each book of the LOTR trilogy,
as he does The Hobbit, which is the prequel.
Together, these books represent the acme of the saga
and the gold standard of the fantasy genre,
absolutely unchallenged prior to J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.

Not my favorite in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, but the more often I read it, the easier it becomes. It does provide a nice bridge from "The Fellowship of the Ring" to "The Return of the King." Now I'm eager to watch the movies again.
