The entire book is comparing a dog's life to an office working experience. Something no small child can possibly understand.

Muldoon is a dog that takes his job very seriously. He knows he was chosen to help the West family and does his best taking care of the kids (he had them on a leash) and family (he gets the family up by pulling on their blankets) and they appreciate his efforts (after he makes a mess sorting the garbage, Mrs. West shoos him outside!). When pay day comes, he is amply rewarded!
