This is a deliciously tart, true character study from one of Canada's best under-hyped writers. At the funeral of her unpleasant husband, Rowena discovers that he had a hidden life with another wife and child who insist they are his legal heirs. Her road to independence is a bumpy one, but with enough wry turns and small triumphs to be fun as well.

Just re-read this story and enjoyed it as much this time as I did many years ago. The widow, Rowena, finds she is far from alone and lonely or, indeed, helpless and hopeless. An intelligent and humourous novel where the widow hardly has a moment to weep and yet still manages to create a satisfactory new reality for herself.

A beautiful bittersweet book. It was first recommended to me by Bill Richardson on CBC radio over 15 years ago.
