The acclaimed bestselling classic of Holocaust literature, winner of the Booker Prize and the Los Angeles Times Book Award for Fiction, and the inspiration for the classic film--"a masterful account of the growth of the human soul" ( Los Angeles Times Book Review ).

A stunning novel based on the true story of how German war profiteer and factory director Oskar Schindler came to save more Jews from the gas chambers than any other single person during World War II. In this milestone of Holocaust literature, Thomas Keneally, author of Daughter of Mars , uses the actual testimony of the Schindlerjuden --Schindler's Jews--to brilliantly portray the courage and cunning of a good man in the midst of unspeakable evil.

This book is unforgettable. I read the novel twenty years ago and the story has stayed with me. I heard Leon Leyson speak about his experiences as the youngest person on Schindler's list. He wrote a book called The Boy on the Wooden Box, which is his amazing story of survival.

I loved the film by Spielberg which made me want to read the book. Unfortunately, the book wasn't that great. I guess Keneally was not sure whether to make it into a novel or a history book. I tried really hard to go through it, but I couldn't. The book is kind of boring in my opinion.

An important work to read and remember. The book chronicles Schindler's personal and private lives and his bravery to save his workers.

I put off reading this book for ten years after I saw the movie. I was worried I would find it too emotional and oppressive. I was surprised that it wasn't, really. After all, Schindler's List is told by the ones who survived. It is a tale of survival agains insurmountable odds, and of people's ingenuity in times of great stress, and of people who survived because others helped. I just kept flipping to the page where it credited "sources" and if I found that last name listed, it meant that someone in that family had gotten out. And then I could keep reading.

Interesting portrait of the man behind the movie. Recommended for narrative non-fiction lovers.
