The year is 1953 and in Havana people can get anything for a price. Fidel Castro is talking about reforms and revolution. The Americans, afraid of things getting out of control, send one man to deal with anyone who represents any kind of threat. The Russians also send their man to observe the situation, but unlike the American, the Russian is there to protect, not to eliminate.

I liked the interweaving of historic events and characters with fictional plotting. Because we already know what happens historically, it puts a nice spin on the unfolding of the novel. It has been noted in other reviews that Mr. Hunter creates few women characters, but I am curous to see what kind of women he would write if he did. Havana offers us Earl Swagger's Arkansas wife, Junie, and Jean-Marie Armstrong, a well-connected sophisticate in Cuba, alongside a huge body count of prostitutes and lonely housewives. I am hoping some of his other novels that I will be reading will improve on this point.

Havana ----
by Stephen Hunter C-2003 ----

Well Stephen Hunter sure spun quite a story for poor defenseless, easy going Earl Swagger. ---- This story is about Cuba, Based around Castros' early days, the yarn is quite comic. I wonder if the real Castro has read this novel. Should raise his temp a little. ---- He is a self centered wimp in this story and botches everything he tries. ---- Because of other troubles that American companys' are haveing in Cuba, Earl is hired by the Spooks to go down south with an Important U.S. Gov. Official. ----
The bigwig is more interested in partys' and hookers in the Cuba Playland of the day. ---- Earl rescues him and the story line starts to rock and roll. ----It is a fun read and hard to put down. ---- Enjoy! ----
