While traveling through Kuala Lumpur, Sarah Wode-Douglass, the editor of a London poetry magazine meets Christopher Chubb, a destitute Australian writer driven to the brink of madness by his imagination. Chubb claims to have created the legend of Bob McCorkle, a writer whose controversial poems led to an editor's demise. Chubb insists that McCorkle isn't real, yet he tells an astonishing tale of his struggles with this monstrous nemesis who allegedly kidnapped his daughter. Thus begins a lifelong obsession for Sarah to find a mysterious manuscript and the truth.

Taking a true episode of a literary hoax as a starting point, Carey jumps off real events into a wild and inexpressibly sad story of a man who starts as a fake, but ends up becoming a real person. He is a modern Frankenstein, the invention come to life, who can never truly live as a person but can't stop trying.

I loved it. I like to write so it was pretty fun for me to read. Didn't like the fact that Chubbs had to die, but overall it was really cool.
