By the time Grace is eighteen, she has been orphaned, moved countries and lost touch with her only brother. She can't help thinking that she's managed to lose, rather carelessly, anything she's ever loved. So she decides to revisit her past in America, and she's brought her camera to catch these memories. What she isn't expecting that long, hot summer in New Hampshire is to meet the love of her life... Some years later, now divorced and flourishing as a controversial photographer, Grace finds that she is being haunted by the past. And when she slips on a fallen autumn leaf, her past crashes into her present...

On her birthday Grace receives a painting and accompanying note from her dead lover, forwarded to her by his widow. Then, while staying with her stepmother, a denigrating article on her life and photographic work is printed in the Sunday papers. Through a series of flashbacks triggered by comments in the article, we get to know the acerbic, devastatingly forthright young Grace and how she has coped with the loss of her parents, the rejection of her first love and her own rejection of her husband and his family. A woman who has increasingly defined herself through her photography, Grace’s dedication to her work causes her much grief as she feels she put it above her care and love for Jefferson, her lover, while he was dying of cancer.
