I was pleasantly surprised. Jen explores the interesting premise of a mixed-race family that is trying to live a stereotypical suburban lifestyle. When a new quasi-family member shows up their fragile bonds are strained.

The writing is incisive and perceptive at times, and the plot stays interesting and even unpredictable - to me the characters could be more complex.
