Seven years ago Kaylin fled the crime-riddled streets of Nightshade, knowing that something was after her. Children were being murdered -- and all had the same odd markings that mysteriously appeared on her own skin....

Since then, she's learned to read, she's learned to fight and she's become one of the vaunted Hawks who patrol and police the City of Elantra. Alongside the winged Aerians and the immortal Barrani, she's made a place for herself, far from the mean streets of her birth.

But children are once again dying, and a dark and familiar pattern is emerging. Kaylin is ordered back into Nightshade with a partner she knows she can't trust, a Dragon lord for a companion and a device to contain her powers -- powers that no other human has. Her task is simple -- find the killer, stop the murders...and survive the attentions of those who claim to be her allies!

I couldn't handle much of this book as the writing was so poor. I had to re-read several parts to try to figure out which character was speaking, the metaphors made no sense or made me cringe, and the punctuation was irritating - I'm inclined to gift the author a book on basic grammar, with a second copy to go to whoever proof-read this. Just ugh.

I found myself frustrated with the range of histrionics exhibited by this heroine. She swallows (hard), roars, screams, shivers, shudders, constantly reacts , rarely thinks (she's not very smart) and frankly is somewhat of a loser. What's a mystery is why everyone puts up with her. Yet the book has something - maybe she will mature over the series. One mildly irritating literary habit the author has is to say things like: "It was true. It was not true". Variations on that get a bit tedious. And the Leontines sound ridiculous. Doubly histrionic. The book lost me at times with mystical-sounding mumbo jumbo about dragon history etc. Not bad for a first in the series I guess.

This a really good book, and series. It has a very original feeling, the only draw back is that it becomes quite complicated at certain points in this book, and other points in the series. I would still definitely recommend this book to those that love fantasy and heroines.

A police procedural set in a fantasy world. While I like this concept, I found the novel to be decent, but often times confusing. Almost everyone seems to know what is going on, except the main character, and no one seems to care to explain things to her. And when they do, it is with exasperation. Sagara has created a unique and vast world here to explore, but she does little to actually flesh it out. Still, the characters are engaging and the world (though unexplored) is fascinating. It is interesting that the story feels more like an urban fantasy than your standard sword and magic. The storyline is definitely a set up the rest of the series. Hopefully the author catches her stride and the series will improve.

The complexity of the characters, their emotions and the mystery all combine to make a really compelling story. Really glad I picked it up on recommendation.

Good SF Fantasy. Not the easiest reading. No sex. But while it may not be inappropriate for young readers it would probably not interest them. Interesting enough that I am going to read the next book in the series.
