Great read novel! Based on the true life of a woman ruler in an era of male ruler domination. Beautifully written and informative descriptions of the forbidden city - the opulent palace and gardens, and all those who lived in this dangerous court life. Recommend reading Empress Orchid novel first about her early life.

I would recommend reading "Empress Orchid" before this book. An excellent source of historical information that few Westerners are aware of - including the incidents leading up to the takeover of China by Western and Russian interests, the aggression of Japan towards China and Korea. Not least of all, the continuing story of the life of the last Empress of China.
