I have read all of Gruen's books and have thoroughly enjoyed them. However, this one is terrible. I can't believe the same author who wrote Water for Elephants wrote this! I couldn't tolerate the characters and frankly, the plot wasn't that interesting either.

Can't decide if I want to read the sequel. The main character was so incredibly messed up so many times I wanted to shake her but then again perhaps she was pretty believable considering her circumstances. So all in all it was a well written story.

In this book Guen introduces us to her wonderfully imperfect and slightly nutty heroine Annemarie Zimmer. I enjoyed it. No waiting list for the ebook (woo hoo). Sequel is Flying Changes.

What do girls, who once read "The Black Stallion", and the Chestnut Hill series do when they're all grown up? Why, they stumble across "Water for Elephants" author Sara Gruen's lovely horsey confection, "Riding lessons." I'm one of those gals, and throughly enjoyed this adult tale, which stars a rare "brindled chestnut" eventer, the requisite love story side helping & angry teenage daughter. Still, Gruen knows her stuff - and to me -- a horsewoman with some 20 years in the saddle, it rings true.

A quick read - I polished this one off in a couple of days. I found the book enjoyable even though a little predictable.

I was a little disheartened when I read the reviews before reading the book. But I have to say... They're pretty spot on. It's a very easy read and a pretty good story. But... Oh my goodness... The main character does make you want to pull your hair out. I'm hoping that my opinion of her changes in 'Flying Changes'. All in all, a decent read.

light read. Heroine is quite self destructive and annoying

Was not as good as I had hoped it would be after reading "Water for Elephants". I enjoyed the story as a light read I guess. The main character in fact is somewhat annoying - yes, we all make mistakes, but how can anyone mess up their life so badly? It's like watching a train wreck. The characters in "Water for Elephants" were endearing and believable.
