Groundbreaking, if underseen, lesbian love story from 1985. Set in the late 50s, a straight laced college professor from the East Coast travels to Reno for a divorce, only to meet a spirited, self-assured younger woman who kindles unexpected feelings. It's subtle, warm, and erotic, making good use of the Western setting and featuring great performances and a nostalgic soundtrack, including songs by Patsy Cline, Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent, and Johnny Cash. This was recently released by Criterion, so hopefully it will find a wider audience.

This movie is beautiful, tender, intimate and necessary! Femme love at its most rustic and endearing, the film will warm you with southern charm and lesbian love.

Long before BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, the female version of same-sex love, western-style, was introduced to 1980's audiences with DESERT HEARTS. It is 1950s Nevada, and Professor Vivian Bell arrives to get a divorce. She's unsatisfied with her marriage, and feels out of place at the ranch she stays on, she finds herself increasingly drawn to Cay Rivers, an open and self-assured lesbian, and the ranch-owner's daughter. The emotions released by their developing intimacy, and Vivian's insecurities about her feelings towards Cay, are played out against a backdrop of rocky landscapes and country and western songs. Starring one of Canada's most critically acclaimed actresses of the 70's and 80's, Helen Shaver, this movie was unusually frank about the subject matter of forbidden love at the time, and her American co-star, Patricia Charbonneau, was equally taken with the task of portraying and projecting realism in a very macho western setting.
