The Fish fall in love
Mahiha Ashegh Mishavand
DVD - 2009 | Persian
After 22 years absence, Aziz decides to return to his hometown to sell the house where he was born. But, to his astonishment, the place is now a small restaurant, run by four women, one of them a girl whom he once dated. Atieh's singular passion is food, and her popular restaurant on the sleepy Caspian coast of Iran is her pride and joy. When Aziz appears, threatening her means of supporting her daughter, Atieh prepares his favorite dishes, one night at a time, in a desperate effort to convince him not to close the restaurant.

Add a CommentI felt like this movie bought us right into the restaurant and home and boat with the characters. Beautifully written and shared. I love that it doesn't give you everything you need to know but allows you to think and participate with your own mind. Great to me!!
This languid story of lost love and lost property was too often puzzling to this viewer perhaps because of the different cultural norms between East and West. The cinematography is outstanding with tantalizing close-up shots of trays of food; captivating orange and tea gardens; and lively street market scenes. But the quixotic relationship between Atieh, the restauranteur, and Aziz the returned refugee architect was puzzling; and the lack of communication between the characters seemed incredible.
Like many other Iranian films I've seen, this one leaves you to decide how things continue. Though slow at the beginning, you will grow to admire these long suffering women who cook up dishes that must tantalize the palate as much as they excited my eyes. Don't eject the DVD too soon. Hang in there and enjoy a great little story.
