A gripping thriller debut, set deep in the heart of the world's most powerful political arena.

A year ago, fresh out of Harvard Law School, Mike Ford landed his dream job at the Davies Group, Washington's most powerful consulting firm. Now, he's staring down the barrel of a gun, pursued by two of the world's most dangerous men. To get out, he'll have to do all the things he thought he'd never do again: lie, cheat, steal -- and this time, maybe even kill.

Mike grew up in a world of small-stakes con men, learning lessons at his father's knee. His hard-won success in college and law school was his ticket out. As the Davies Group's rising star, he rubs shoulders with "The 500," the elite men and women who really run Washington -- and the world. But peddling influence, he soon learns, is familiar work: even with a pedigree, a con is still a con.

Combining the best elements of political intrigue and heart-stopping action, The 500 is an explosive debut, one that calls to mind classic thrillers like The Firm and Presumed Innocent . In Mike Ford, readers will discover a new hero who learns that the higher the climb, the harder -- and deadlier -- the fall.

This book was awarded the 2013 Best First Book by an author. The story is intriguing. Set in Washington DC, the story is about a firm known for its power in the capital, but, unknown, are the shady ways that power was gained in getting leverages over the politicians, judges, senators who make the laws and important decisions. There is no good word for lobbyists in this novel. The author may have had some insight into politics and lobbyist firms through his job as a journalist for the well respected "Atlantic" magazine. The author has an engaging writing style and draws the reader in with his portrayal of the young under privileged, but very smart, university student getting his first job with a prestigious firm in DC.

Read this author before and like it a lot.

Excitement porn. Brainless, manipulative. In retrospect, what a waste of time.

"Smart and well written, this debut novel - which was selected as a "Best Beach Read" by The Hollywood Reporter and won the ITW Award for Best First Novel in 2013 - is being likened to John Grisham's The Firm ("only with a whole lot more action," says bestselling author James Patterson). It stars former con artist and Harvard Law student Mike Ford, who accepts a position with a consulting firm whose specialty is pulling strings for (and pulling the strings of) the top 500 most powerful people inside the Beltway. If you love this intrigue-filled book, you'll be pleased to know that there's a sequel in the pipeline." Thrillers and Suspense November 2013 newsletter

This book started very well in spite of more narrative than I care for, but then the story began to get so convoluted and unbelievable, that i lost interest. I scanned the last half just to see how he (Quirk) wrapped up an impossible situation.

I don't think John Grisham has anything to worry about.

Awesome read! This will be a great movie! Grisham meets Jason Bourne!

I enjoyed this book almost as much as I did when I read the story the first time, The Firm by John Grisham. I guess if they can remake movies they can rewrite books but I sure hope the author got Mr. Grisham's permission first.

Mike Ford lands his dream job at a powerful consulting firm, but he soon learns that the pay cheque, the perks, and the prestige come at a huge cost. Lots of action, interesting characters, and the lure of the con.
