The Arctic and Antarctic remain the greatest wildernesses on Earth. The scale and beauty of the scenery and the sheer power of the elements, the weather, the rough ocean and the ice, is unmatched anywhere else on our planet. tells the compelling story of animals such as the wandering albatross, the adelie penguin and the polar bear, and paints a portrait that will take your breath away, at a moment when, melting fast, the frozen regions of our planet may soon be changed forever.

Very interesting series on the South Pole. Many times I used my iPad to look up information that was on the DVD. I would probably watch this a second time. Beautiful scenery, what a fantastic world we have!

Nice polar region atmosphere. Has room for all kinds of polar animals. Teaches us about the changing polar ice caps. So simple enough that it is award winning. Another step in the right direction, just like BBC Earth's Africa. A regular A might do it.

Such great film shots. The crew got so close to filming animals and ice caps. The cave scenes are interesting how the icicles form!! Well done!! Worth watching!!

I had gotten this set confused with Life in the Freezer (also with David Attenborough) so I was very happy to realize I hadn't seen this one yet!
As always, Attenborough hits a home run with his narrative and the stunning BBC footage makes this just as fascinating as the other BBC documentaries.
Reading other comments here about the condition of the discs -- I am also often disappointed in how badly people treat library materials... however, this set worked fine for me, I had no issues on playback (yay!).
That said -- if you borrow this set, make sure you watch ALL of the bonus materials, video diaries, etc -- they're ALL interesting, and there are enough of them to make another good 60+ minutes of documentary! There is a really interesting one where they film the sequence of killer whales creating waves to wash seals off ice floes ... well, when the seals are done, they turn their attention on the inflatable raft with the BBC crew in it! I doubt they were trying to kill them or anything, Orca being as smart as they are probably knew they were being watched and wanted to show the BBC folks what they can do!

re. 1aa's response, I myself am constantly amazed at the bad shape all the dvds at Public Library are, after a few months of their purchase date. I think most people don't give a f*ck about being careful when they borrow them, reasonning, "hey, it's not mine"... You know, the typical attitude today, not only of young people but most adult as well. It's as if it's cool to destroy or damage what doesn't belong to you, that's you're a "bad a**" because you took something from the man... Some of the dvds are in such bad condition, not to mention the boxes they are in, that its a disgrace to the users who manhandled them. If you can't teach your kids to respect stuff that doesn't belong to you, and you yourself are not careful, what is the world coming to ?

Wonderful camera work, thoughtful perspective on climate change and the BBC's standard of excellence.

The first episode of disk 1 is substantially unwatchable because of scratching. How does one scratch a DVD? One puts it into to the player, presses 'close' and then presses 'play'. How on earth could it get scratched?
Otherwise a visually stunning series.

Stunning, Gorgeous AND narrated by David Attenborough. A must-see in my book!

As per usual, BBC does a stunning series based on the artic and antartic regions. I do find it is not as cohesive as some of their other series, most notably Planet Earth and Life. Still worth watching - also love the extra episode that was added.
