Spenser takes up a seemingly open and closed cold case at the behest of a street-wise teen-age girl, who believes her mother's murderers went free. As Spenser digs deeper into the mystery, he finds a much more dangerous and complex mystery than he bargained for. When fourteen-year-old Mattie Sullivan asks Spenser to look into her mother's murder, he's not completely convinced by her claim that the police investigation four years ago was botched. Mattie is gruff, street-smart, and wise beyond her years, left to care for her younger siblings and an alcoholic grandmother in a dilapidated apartment in South Boston. But her need for closure and her determination to make things right hit Spenser where he lives, they're the very characteristics he abides by.

I didn't read the Parker original, but I enjoyed this one. 7 of 10 for me.

This is a better version of the late Robert Parker with sensible story connections. 7 of 10 stars

I think that Atkins did a pretty good job of capturing Spenser's personality, language, approach to solving problems and so on; it felt like Spenser, and it was a joy to be in his presence again. And the situation Spenser found himself in, and his response to the 14 year old client felt classic. I wasn't so happy with Hawk; he felt "off" to me, without the depth of Parker's Hawk. But if you like Robert B. Parker, I think you'll like this. I'd listen to more.
