In the town of Kingsbridge during the middle of the twelfth century, the lives of those who are working to build the most amazing Gothic cathedral in the world become entwined through their ambitions, loves, and tribulations. At once, this is a sensuous and enduring love story and an epic that shines with the fierce spirit of a passionate age.

I was hoping for a lot more from this movie.
I enjoyed the beautiful scenery and understanding more about the monumental task of building a cathedral in the 12th century. What spoiled this film and undermined its credibility, was its numerous anachronisms. For example, when the woman jumped up on a table that Bishop Waleran is seated at, pulled up her skirt and urinated on him while the Prior and a roomful of monks simply watched and did nothing to intervene. Really? Gasping is the best they could do? Not one of them would step forward to prevent that happening to one of the most powerful men in the kingdom?
After a number of these types of incidents, I simply could not take the movie seriously. It seemed like a joke. I read and watch historical books/movies to learn more about times past, not to have present-day culture super-imposed on history. For me, that's a waste of time, which is what this movie was.
