Thousands of miles away in New York, Laura resolves to unearth the dark secrets of her past. Determined to find the truth about her older sister's disappearance fifteen years ago.

A dead body, a missing girl, and a mysterious family's dangerous obsession with bull running provide a sinister backdrop to DI Fleming's first murder investigation . And as the cold shadow of death looms ever larger over this quiet corner of rural Britain, one thing becomes clear: it won't be her last.

An enjoyable read as one tries to solve the murder of the dead girl whose mumified body is found buried in a farmer's yard when it is to be used as a burial pit for the farmer's dead animals infected with foot and mouth disease. This time DI Margery Fleming finds helpful a psychologist who herself, like her sister, almost becomes a fatality at the hands of the disgruntled main character. Good red herrings as all family members and farm hands come under suspicion. Author also shows how farmers too suffer from the slaughter of their herds done at the will of the government.

The difficulties of combining her work as detective, farmer’s wife and teenager’s mother in a small community in Galloway are acerbated when D.I. Marjorie Fleming is delegated to police the slaughter of animals during the foot-and-mouth outbreak of 2001. Unable to comfort her husband who is quarantined on their infected farm, “Big Marge” struggles with the evil unleashed when human remains are revealed in one of the burial pits dug for the cattle.
