'There can't be a woman alive who hasn't once realised, in a moment of panic, that she's in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong man. Louise Doughty, more sure-footed with each novel, leads her unnerved reader into dark territory. A compelling and bravely-written book.' Hilary Mantel

Yvonne Carmichael has worked hard to achieve the life she always wanted: a high-flying career in genetics, a beautiful home, a good relationship with her husband and their two grown-up children.

Then one day she meets a stranger at the Houses of Parliament and, on impulse, begins a passionate affair with him - a decision that will put everything she values at risk.

At first she believes she can keep the relationship separate from the rest of her life, but she can't control what happens next. All of her careful plans spiral into greater deceit and, eventually, a life-changing act of violence.

Apple Tree Yard is a psychological thriller about one woman's adultery and an insightful examination of the values we live by and the choices we make, from an acclaimed writer at the height of her powers.

Didn't enjoy this book as much as I thought I would, especially after reading comparisons to Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train. I found the main character ridiculously naïve, especially for such a brilliant scientist. Found in the end I really didn't care what happened to her or her co-accused and the great reveal at the end was an unsurprising letdown.

Fans of psychological thrillers such as Gone Girl and Girl on the Train might like to try this book. The plot is slightly different, but the author uses many of the same conventions to pull the reader into a taut, disturbing world where a very smart, successful middle-aged geneticist, highly respected in her field and happily married, finds herself drawn into an fairly tawdry affair and ultimately finds herself on trial for murder. Creepy, compelling and twisty, if slightly unbelievable. This is a good book to lose yourself in.

This book has really stayed with my since I read it a few years ago. I think picked it up because it was a Richard and Judy Book Club pick which I tend to like. I listened to this as an audiobook which I think enhanced my enjoyment as it was narrated by Juliet Stevenson. She is, in my opinion, one of the finest audiobook narrators ever. Anyway, this is a psychological thriller that begins with a bad choice that spirals out of control. I don't want to give too much away as to ruin the plot. If you enjoyed Sister by Rosamund Lupton or Before I go to sleep by SJ Watson. You must read this.

A psychological thriller structured around a trial about a woman' self-deception. A page-turner.

GONE GIRL fans: this is the book you have been waiting for. The plot may be different, but the same deep sense of foreboding as the characters realize how little they know about one another is present, along with the excellent pacing.

For those who thought Flynn's book not subtle enough, the confident and mature Yvonne Carmichael is your antidote. Not to be missed.

"Though happily (enough) married, scientist Yvonne Carmichael acted on an impulse and found herself embroiled in a heated affair. Now, sitting in a courtroom after being charged with murder, along with her lover, Yvonne revisits that relationship in the cold light of day, reflecting on the man she clearly didn't know quite well enough. To say too much more about the plot would be unfair to potential readers, but Booklist calls Yvonne's story "spellbinding, shocking, seductive, and wickedly intense."
