For two years, Cyrus and Antigone Smith have run a sagging roadside motel with their older brother, Daniel. Nothing ever seems to happen. Then a strange old man with bone tattoos arrives, demanding a specific room.

Less than 24 hours later, the old man is dead. The motel has burned, and Daniel is missing. And Cyrus and Antigone are kneeling in a crowded hall, swearing an oath to an order of explorers who have long served as caretakers of the world's secrets, keepers of powerful relics from lost civilizations, and jailers to unkillable criminals who have terrorized the world for millennia.

N. D. Wilson, author of Leepike Ridge and 100 Cupboards, returns with an imagination-capturing adventure that inventively combines the contemporary and the legendary.

This was my first introduction to N. D. Wilson (My parents got it for me for Christmas when it first came out), and as the girl
tomboy homeschooler I was, I devoured it!! He is now my favorite author, and I own all his books! For teens at least. This is the first book in the series, and even though the character development seems to be lacking, if you compare the Cyrus of Empire of Bones with the Cyrus of the Dragon's Tooth, then you will be very surprised.
Also, I would encourage any reader to look up the places & transmortals, as a lot of them are real.

Excellent read. It is fast paced, and you get to know the characters well through their actions and decisions. The author incorporates real places and history into the fantasy, making it more believable and close to home. While an easy read for an adult, I certainly wasn't ever bored!

This book never let me stop to catch my breath. It's very good if u don't mind a lack of descriptive quality and character development. Shame that such great ideas and plot twists weren't packaged better. If the author was better at describing the environment, people, and actions happening this could've been a book to rival tolkien and potter, unfortunately it's painfully fast paced and doesn't let u have time to bond with the main characters until it's too late.

"After a mysterious, violent incident that results in the kidnapping of their older brother, Cyrus and Antigone Smith discover that they're now part of the Order of Brendan, a secret society for explorers. The siblings head to the Order's headquarters in Ashtown in search of answers, but instead they encounter immortal enemies, mythological creatures, magical artifacts, and shocking family secrets. Set in an imaginative alternate world, this 1st volume in the Ashtown Burials series combines relentless action and well-drawn characters to create an irresistible fantasy adventure." Don't listen to that comment! Best book ever! Very good, twisting plot that requires you to think to understand. Five stars.

This book made absolutely no sense at all. After reading 200 pages, nothing had been explained and I had absolutely no idea what was going on. Cyrus and Antigone (the main characters) weren't developed, really, and everyone important to the story had died within the first 5 chapters.

Confusing and horrible book!
