Many of the comments here are about the film "The Promise" not this one - a slight difference in the title but an important one to note - "A Promise."

Started well, but became too violent and brutal with the genocide of the Armenians.

Absolutely excellent story of the Armenian holocaust by the Turks.

I found this movie to be really good, entertaining and kept you watching.

Couldn't watch it--the tedious love triangle that prefaces the meat of the movie was too long and boring of a preface. Probably better to get your history from a history book than a fictional movie anyway.

The Promise can't seem to decide whether it wants to be Doctor Zhivago or Schindler's List. The characters are too passionless for a decent love story, and the film seems unwilling to show the viewer anything distinctive about Armenian culture or community, so that their survival as a people never seems to mean more than the physical survival of individuals. In either case, to do justice to the story The Promise wants to tell, it had to be an epic, and the film we have is unfortunately constrained. Not bad, but not what it could have been.

Some history about World War one I had forgotten. We really enjoyed this movie and went to the internet afterwards to learn more about that period of time. After some reading I went to a small container I have had for years that I keep special items and pulled out my grandfathers dog tag the one he wore when he served in the US military during that war.

Both a highly informative and entertaining. This captivating movie depicts the genocide of 1.5M Armenians by the Turks of the Ottoman Empire. This is tragic and pertinent as it is denied by Turkey up until this day. Great acting and interesting storyline.

Please watch this movie! We think the critics got this one wrong (they rated it only 50%)! Their main complaints were regarding the triangular romance. While yes, that part was a bit lacking, it was really only a vehicle to give you a picture of their lives before the movie's real focus: the systematic persecution and execution of Armenian people by the Turkish government at the beginning of WWI. This should be common knowledge, just as the Holocaust of WWII is! History DOES repeat itself if we let it. We definitely side with the audience rating of 95%, giving it a solid 4 stars. By the way, although many believe the title refers to the promise of marriage (and maybe it does), we believe it also means the promise of hope, survival, and new life for the Armenian people.

A grand Hollywood historic drama with A-list actors, exquisite cinematography, haunting landscape (filmed primarily in the Iberian Peninsula) and supported by egregious events that the Turkish government strongly denied. Similar message as "The Cut 2014" but instead of a man looking for survivors of his family, it chronicled a trio of lovers' experience amid the Armenian genocide, AKA the Armenian Holocaust by the Ottoman Empire during WWI.

Note: “The Promise” refers to the love triangle at the center of the film and all proceeds from the film will go to charity: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/christian-bale-oscar-isaac-the-promise-movie-armenian-genocide/

Our village sat high in the mountains of Southern Turkey. It was half Turk, half Armenian.
You're not a Turk. Armenians have to apply in their hometown.
The Armenians are a tumor in our midst, Emre. Do you understand?
Involving the mass arrest of intellectuals, bankers and clergy. It does appear to be an attempt to stifle and silence the Armenian population.
Who are you to spread such rumors?
-Right now... Outside of Siroun... You'll find the bodies of every Armenian from my village rotting in a river. Every man, woman and child marched from their home, brought there and slaughtered, all of them. My father. My wife. Stabbed, slashed open. Our unborn child ripped from her womb. You don't believe me?
Hmm? Go. Go look for yourself. Follow the vultures and the smell.

I made a promise. I... can't go back on that, uncle.
He's a spy. And he has used journalism to smear the ottoman empire and its soldiers around the world with his fabrication about the relocation of the Armenians.
We will build a future together, Maral and I. And we will grow to love each other.
And you will be proud of us.
I fell in love with someone. I can't do this. I can't marry Maral.
-You have to marry Maral. Whatever happened, that was another life.
Our revenge will be to survive.
My darling Yeva told me that her greatest wish was that her parents and our dear Ana were here. I told her I know that they are. For sure, they are here. And all of your parents and all those families lost in an attempt to wipe our nation from the face of the earth. But we're still here. We're still here.
