This is a luscious, whip-smart reply to Flaubert's classic tragedy of the woman who can't get what she wants out of life. Gemma Bovary is as unlike Mme Bovary as you could imagine--literally choking on the pleasures of life as she eats them up. The camera follows her adorable softness in little cotton dresses with the illicit perversity of the tragic, unfulfilled old man's eyes which the viewer both enjoys and can't help but creep out on. The benefits of feminism and the sexual revolution clearly missed his generation, but Gemma Bovary lives large.

A remake of the classic that focuses more on a unhappily married middle-aged man's obsession with the incandescent and beautiful heroine, Gemma. She forthrightly tries to snap him out of his delusion that her life is not following the book (which he knows by heart). The French countryside is carefully portrayed and so is the unraveling of marriage(s).

If you're expecting a present day version of Madame Bovary be aware that this isn't it. In fact the titular character isn't even the protagonist. It's the neighbour, a baker who might actually be described as, though well-meaning, her stalker. He is also old enough to be her father, which is one more dose of sexism here I could have done without. The baker meets and crushes on the wife of the new owners of the house across the street. He ignores his own wife, who appears somewhat younger than him. Men ignoring their already younger wives for even younger women would appear to be a constant in Posy Simmonds' books, if Tamara Drewe is anything to go by. I can't tell if she is making a comment on this behaviour or mildly approving of it.

The baker watches Gemma have an affair and worries that she will suffer the fate of the woman in the Flaubert novel. If, like me, you found all the characters unlikeable, you won't mind if one or more of them do meet a sticky end.

A charming and quirky film that doesn't take itself too seriously. I found myself smiling most of the way through. Fabulous performances by the lead actors. And, by the way, it DOES have English subtitles.

Fabulous movie! If you are learning French, it is very entertaining. Fabrice Luchini is one of my favourite French actors.

2 more suckers on the waiting list, I hope they realize it's in FRENCH. Because I didn't, and that's a shock after you're all nicely settled in to watch, I thought my disc player was on the fritz. Anyhow, it was a good movie, very European sex, pastoral, minimalist story told like a fairytale, ordinary people and ordinary moments celebrated in film.

(this listing says English and French language tracks, and I tried, but I am sure MPL's disc offers only French with English subtitles. Unless my player really is possessed. )

I liked it. Improbable in places, but kept my attention the whole way through. The funniest scene is at the end, when his son tells a whopper sending him out to meet the new neighbours under the assumption that they are Russian!

An average flick on the fixation of an older man on the life of a younger woman, who engages in adultery. I can't quite place it as a comedy or something else. Subtitles.
