The Thing is a smart horror flick. R.J MacReady (Kurt Russell) is one of twelve men stationed at a scientific outpost in Antarctica. When they encounter something that threatens their lives, they need more than ever to stick together. But paranoia builds, they begin to mistrust each other, and slowly their solidarity begins to disintegrate.
Strong performances here. The characters are believable and act in ways that are reasonable, given their circumstances (which is not always true of these kinds of films). The setting in Antarctica (actually filmed in Alaska) adds both an austere beauty as well as a sense of isolation.

With a thick, thick air of intense paranoia and jaw-dropping monster effects work, The Thing stands as one of the greatest films of both the horror and science fiction genres.

This is a classic in its genre, sci-fi horror. The special effects hold up really well and are still terrifying. Music is excellent, pacing great, actors strong, direction solid. Highly recommended.

John Carpenter awesome writer and the movies wow, huge Kurt Russell fan. He was always great in Walt Disney. Versatile actor. Wife Goldie Hawn is also great.

If you're a horror fan who hasn't seen Carpenter's 1982 version of The Thing, you're missing out. Made in the good old days before CGI made anything possible, this movie has the right combination of gruesome special effects and psychological horror.

This well could be my favorite horror film in general. The ideas it seeds in the viewer, the puppetry and effects. The suspense and psychological horror, all of it are played masterfully in this film. It's the kind of horror that sticks like a plaque to your mind and will make you take a glance over your shoulder here and there.

Absolutely a must watch for any fan of psychological, suspenseful horror.

Forget about Alien!!! The Thing is by far the best sci fi horror out there. The suspense and horror is relentless, the gore gut wrenching and the concept is super cool. Also the claustrophobia factor in this movie was amazing. 10/10

Absolutely one of the most brilliant sci-fi/horror films ever made, the merits of which are too many to name here. Tone. Ambience. Feelings. No one does this anymore and those that try fall on their faces. Cannot top this.

Violence: One of the most graphic, gory, gross, squelchy vomit worthy movies ever made. Even in 2016. Not for the squeamish. Even non sensitive people will skip eating for a few days!

Violence: The alien-thing in its transformations gets pretty violent.
