Criminal lawyer and bestselling mystery author Erle Stanley Gardner wrote nearly 150 novels that have sold 300 million copies worldwide. Now, the American Bar Association is bringing back his most famous and enduring novels--featuring criminal defense lawyer and sleuth Perry Mason--in striking trade paperback editions. Matilda Benson hires Perry Mason to help her retrieve her spoiled niece's IOUs from a gambling ship. When Mason gets to the floating casino, he finds Benson and her niece onboard, the ship's owner dead from a gunshot wound, and a gun thrown over the ship's railing. Is Mason's client a murderer?

A good, old fashioned mystery by one of the best mystery writers ever! No blood and gore, no sex and violence, just great plotting and great writing. Perry Mason solves crimes by using his wits, he doesn't beat up or torture people to get a confession. (He is really as much a detective as he is a lawyer, so you have to suspend your disbelief. I practiced law for 30 years and never met a lawyer like Perry Mason!) This book was originally published in 1937, so parts of it are racist, sexist, and politically incorrect. But Raymond Chandler's work is, at a minimum, politically incorrect, and if you ignore Chandler or Gardner, then you will miss out. This is the second Perry Mason book that I have read, and I intend to read the entire Perry Mason series.
