"Mark Ruffalo gives one of his most appealing performances in writer-director Maya Forbes' irresistible feature debut."--Variety
"Mark Ruffalo is so wonderful as a bipolar single dad who raises his two daughters in 1970s Boston that you can almost overlook that Maya Forbes' quasi-autobiographical film is the latest in a long line of dramedies romanticizing mental illness."--New York Post
"Ruffalo does a magnificent job of conveying Cam's charm and undeniable love for his wife and children - as well as the devastating effects of serious, incurable mental illness."--Chicago Sun-Times
"The film boasts two of the best child performances so far this year, and Saldana has never been tougher or more vulnerable. Then there's Ruffalo, who demonstrates again why he may be the best actor of his generation."--Boston Globe
When Cam has a manic breakdown that lands him in a mental hospital, his wife Maggie applies to business school and is accepted. Seeing this as her chance to build a better life for their daughters, Maggie asks Cam to become the primary caregiver for the girls while she completes her degree in New York. An excellent movie!

It must be very difficult to be raised by a bipolar parent. Things were either terrible or terrific depending on the mood. Mark Ruffalo is such a good actor.

Having lived with someone with bipolar disorder, this movie brought back not so good memories. I empathised with the children who had to constantly live in a chaotic an unpredictable world and I felt their frustration. We could have done without the vulgar language. It was an ok movie.

This was a awesome movie. The actors were fantastic with their roles. This movie was about a man named Cam who is bipolar raising his two daughters by himself while his wife Maggie was going back to school to get her MBA. He also had to face the ups and downs about raising two girls by himself. He tries to work things out with some neighbors however it backfires. Eventually he helps the kids make friends with some of the kids who live in the apartment and tries to invite them to come over so the kids will have friends to play with. At first the girls were embrassed about where they were living and how the kids might treat them when they find out that their father has bi-polar and if the other kids would make fun of them. Unfortunately they didn't. Then his wife tells him she is moving to New York because she found a job there and wanted to take the kids. The man tried to find her a job in Boston then that backfires also. So she moves to New York and then the kids go to a private school and finally have the better life they deserve. This is actually an excellent movie to recommend other movie lovers to watch.

When this hold came it I forgot why I ordered it. The cover does not depict a movie I would want to watch, but I trusted my past self. I'm so glad I watched it! It was great, and the acting was real. A woman of color tries her best to provide for her family, because her "husband" is bipolar and unable to hold a conventional job. A decent portrayal of what families do to make it work. It isn't perfect, but they get by.

Stupid, contrived and preposterous.

If you are put off by the main character's smoking you must remember the year the movie starts. That is how some people were back then. And smoking was allowed everywhere. I thought this movie was cute & funny. I would not want any child to have to live thru this but, it is just a movie.

This was soooo boring. It's hard to imagine any responsible parent leaving their kids with this guy even for 5 mins. He chain-smoked around them constantly and it drove me nuts. Nothing says I love you like giving your kids lung cancer. Hated every minute of this film. Awful.
