Geography and time frame events which form our experiences. These, in turn, are molded into memory. When other people (strangers) are involved, their experiences, barring the provision of explanatory narrative, take on for us the guise of mysteries. Unraveling mysteries often recomposes our own experiences. This is what Hinterland is about; a series that portrays it very well indeed, moodily presenting the landscape, exterior and interior of dwellings, the turbulent quality of the enveloping light. Seeking a non challenging Hollywood scripted episode, with characters satisfyingly acting as if provided by central casting? Then this series is not for you.

Well-done atmospheric mini series set in Wales.

Hinterland is bleak but beautiful. It is a bit demanding on the viewer but once you begin to relate to the characters you will enjoy it immensely. It's a bit of an acquired taste. Like a fine Scotch. Not everyone appreciates it. But as they say: those who like it, like it a lot. Cheers!

I give Hinterland a well-deserved four stars.

Four very good episodes. Each keeps you guessing.

The Brits are top of the tree for police procedurals, ... but every generalization has its exceptions and this, alas, is one. 'Brooding loner' hardly covers Richard Harrington's 'acting', which appears to be limited to displaying a perpetual scowl that makes this series painful to watch. We get police but very little credible procedure, to the point that we just quit watching after the first episode. Perhaps the series improves as it goes on, but we couldn't summon up the optimism to find out.

I was surprised that I didn't need subtitles--they speak very clearly. Second, the cinematography is fabulous. This is worth watching for the scenery alone, but the crimes are also interesting. Prosser thinks everything is straightforward, and since he is the boss, Mathais has to fight for the clues and against Prosser, and poor Rhys is caught between them.
The stories are well done and as complex and twisting as an Agatha Cristy tale.
Some of the interior settings are so dark we can't see much--so while not overwhelmed with gore we don't get a clear idea of the homes.

Good detective drama and lovely Welsh scenery (and accents!)
