Goblin, a cheerful little homebody, lives in a cosy, rat-infested dungeon, with his only friend, Skeleton. Every day, Goblin and Skeleton play with the treasure in their dungeon. But one day, a gang of "heroic" adventurers bursts in. These marauders trash the place, steal all the treasure, and make off with Skeleton--leaving Goblin all alone!

It's up to Goblin to save the day. But first he's going to have to leave the dungeon and find out how the rest of the world feels about goblins.

Recommend by LPL_MargoM, this fantasy picture book tells the other side of the story - the little goblins and skeletons the "heroes" typically defeat. In this book, however, Goblin is just hanging out with his treasure and his good pal Skeleton when some jerk adventurers decide to ruin all the fun. I read this picture book with a giant grin on my face!

We all know how fantasy stories should go, right? The hero slays the dragon, the adventurers loot the goblin hoard, etc. The heroes in these sorts of stories rarely consider the feelings of the dragons, goblins, skeletons, and various other storybook monsters.

This book takes a look at the other side of the story. A kind and friendly goblin (named Goblin) lives happily with his hoard of treasure. All Goblin wants to do is spend time with his best friend Skeleton (who, of course, is a skeleton.) One day, a group of mean and loud adventurers come and steal all of Goblin's belongings, taking Skeleton with them! Goblin has to go on an adventure of his own to rescue Skeleton and get his treasure back. This book is beautifully illustrated and so much fun to read.

Ben Hatke's next foray into the world is picture books is an absolute success. This critically acclaimed, children's graphic novel creator has a flair for centering stories around unlikely heroes, and this time is no different. Goblin is a delightful and responsible fellow who lives in his dungeon. He enjoys feeding the rats, and chatting with his friend Skeleton. His peaceful days are brought to an end though when a bunch of adventurers literally burst into the scene, stealing all that Goblin cares for. Determined, this little green guy sets out to find his friend, which is made difficult by all the "fair" folk who immediately chase him away. Even though, there are those that dislike him, Goblin also finds some in unexpected places that do like him. Sharp readers will notice the young woman who joins his crew; she plays no role in the story, but in the illustrations we first see her tied up, and tucked away, on the adventurers cart as a prize. The boogey-eyed goblin encounters a bunch of other squat, and frankly cuddly looking, creatures. It's hard to see any of them as a threat, and the art's more classic lines, watered-down colours, and tone setting, isolating black backgrounds, only emphasizes this. Fantasy readers will enjoy this different perspective on the sword and sorcery genre. Nobody Likes a Goblin is an amusing adventure grounded by its lessons of friendship, bravery, and prejudgment.

Poor Goblin! Heroic adventurers stole his best friend Skeleton! Now Goblin has to go out into a world where nobody likes goblins - will he be able to save his friend? This story is so sweet and beautifully illustrated, adults as well as little goblins will enjoy!

Utterly delightful! I love the new take on a classic tale vibe and the LOTR-esque illustrations. My 3 year old loves the cute Goblin and how he rescues his BFF Skeleton. Something for everyone!

Ben Hatke seldom does wrong in my eyes, and if I'm being honest, I think he may easily be one of my favourite graphic novelists and picture book writers. Nobody Likes a Goblin is an adorable look at difference, friendship, and acceptance, and it's whimsical in its approach to these topics.

If there's one thing I love about Ben Hatke's stories, it's that the art and words do an amazing job at evoking emotion. You laugh, smile, frown, and it always comes full circle. This particular book has a goblin for a protagonist and goblins are always unloved in fantasy stories. It was great to see the kinds of lessons that the Goblin was learning. Plus, it has really great appeal for those parents who are into tabletop gaming, as this felt like a children's D&D story. If you have little ones who love a fantasy story, or creatures, then Nobody Likes a Goblin is a worthy picture book to share with your little one.
