The medicus Ruso and his wife, Tilla, are back in the borderlands of Britannia, where he is tending the builders of Hadrian's Great Wall. Having been forced to move off their land, the Britons are distinctly on edge and are still smarting from the failure of a recent rebellion that claimed many lives. The tension grows when Ruso's recently arrived clerk goes missing and things go from bad to worse when the young son of a local family also vanishes. While struggling to keep the peace between the Britons and the Romans, Ruso and Tilla uncover an intricate deception involving slavery and fur trappers, and it becomes imperative that they solve the mystery of the two disappearances before it's too late.

I am really enjoying this series of books. The author makes the reader feel like they are there with all the Romans and the locals.

The references to characters I have forgotten from earlier book are annoying, but it is a good yarn.

Another Great Roman Mystery by Ruth Downie.

As Ruso works to find out whether there is a body in Hadrian's wall, a Briton child is kidnapped. The Britons threaten an uprising, if he is not returned. Since they suspect the Romans of taking the boy, this seems logical, except the Romans don't have him. Can Ruso find him in time to stop a war. As usual, Tilla disregards all instructions as to what she is not supposed to do and still comes out with a clean slate and a murderer at the end. Ruso is bloodied but in good enough condition to be married to Tilla in the British manner.

You may as well dig for the roots of a mountain as try to find the source of a rumor.
