This book is breathtaking, heartbreaking, compelling and inspiring. Heather’s beautifully lyrical style gave the story a dream-like, poetic quality, without softening the contrast of the darkest parts of the narrative.
Ari Appleton is the most spectacular protagonist I have ever come across. Ari blends the intellect and charisma of her down-east literary sister Anne Shirley with the ability to transform unimaginable suffering into jewels through art like her admired Anne Frank. This is a character I will not soon forget, but I hope to carry in my heart along with her sister-House, beloved Papa Len, Aunties M&N, soul-friend Chase, dancing Uncle Iggy, last-dance fiddler Jake, and life-saving teachers Aaron, Ellis and Mina. I am so sad to say good-bye to these characters.
Heather, congratulations on this masterpiece. I hope to one day meet you and have you attend our bookclub. So thrilled to know you represent Durham Region authors. I eagerly await the sequel.
Btw - I would highly recommend that Whitby Public Library carry multiple copies of this title, as well as in audiobook version - I loved listening to this story!
Best book you will read this or next year!
