Shakespearian in its scope and themes; revenge, loyalty, hope and despair, draws us into the lives of two brothers fearing assassination; a young refugee working illegally to cover his mother's medical expenses; a cop obsessed with finding his missing brother. Through this dramatic collision of different worlds, we witness cultural and religious tensions simmering beneath the surface and the tragic consequences of enemies living as neighbors.

“Ajami” is a portrait of various individuals struggling to survive in the very chaotic and dangerous environment of Israel/Palestinian Territories. Some of the characters are forced to lead a life of crime just to save their relatives. Young Christians and Muslims that fall in love are prohibited from seeing each other again. Some influential and powerful people get to play with other people’s lives as if they were toy things. Highly complex interactions and one does not always know what is going on, but this is not as important as soaking up the atmosphere. A second viewing is certain to be highly rewarding.
