"A Queer Love Story presents the first fifteen years of letters between Jane Rule--novelist and the first widely recognized "public lesbian" in North America--and Rick Bébout, journalist and editor with the Toronto-based Body Politic, an important incubator of LGBT thought and activism. Rule lived in a remote rural community on Galiano Island but wrote a column for the magazine. Bébout resided in and was devoted to Toronto's gay village. At turns poignant, scintillating, and incisive, their exchanges include ruminations on queer life and the writing life even as they document some of the most pressing LGBT issues of the '80s and '90s, including HIV/AIDs, censorship, and state policing of desire."--Provided by publisher.

This book is a compilation of letters spanning 1981 through 1995 between BC-based author Jane Rule and Rick Bébout. Their correspondence began when Bébout was editor of the Toronto-based gay liberation journal The Body Politic and originally only concerned itself with the matter-of-course formalities of dealing with a regular column that Rule contributed ("So's Your Grandmother"). Other than both of them having had USA origins, they had very different personal lives and economic backgrounds - their commonality was a mutually profound preoccupation with the challenges of homophobia and the state's persistent interference in individual sexuality. As their correspondence evolved, they used each other as sounding-boards as they further developed their thinking on issues of sexuality, censorship, and the myriad challenges of the battle for gay rights. As the years passed their correspondence nurtured a very warm and loving friendship.

A Queer Love Story reveals the intellectual efforts and insights of two very capable and gifted individuals. There is a lot to learned in their words. Definitely a worthwhile read. A big book - no need to read it in one go (I ended up buying my own copy...)
