"Remember when it all seemed to be getting better? Before Trump happened? What went wrong, and what can we do about it? Naomi Klein--scourge of brand bullies, disaster capitalists and climate liars--shows us how we got to this surreal and dangerous place, how to stop it getting worse and how, if we keep our heads, we can seize the opportunity to make it better. She reveals how Trump is not a freakish aberration, but an extension of the most powerful trends of the last century: celebrity and CEO-worship, Vegas and Guantanamo, soft porn and hard power, fake news and vulture bankers, all rolled into one. His election was not a peaceful transit but a corporate takeover, by people who've knowingly harmed people, societies and our planet. Now their deliberate shock tactics are generating wave after wave of crises, designed to disorientate us and stop us fighting back. This book is the toolkit for shock resistance, giving all of us what we need (including tips such as 'how to jam the brand' and 'kill your inner Trump') to win the argument and right their wrongs. Don't let them get away with it."--Provided by publisher.

Another insightful book from Klein in which she revisits "No Logo" and "The Shock Doctrine" in terms of how they are being played out under Trump and how much worse it will get. She offers a plan of action, "The Leap Manifesto" that brings people together to act. I admire her recognition of the need to be positive.

This is Klein's most readable book and very timely. It synthesizes what she has said in her previous books. If you don't have time to read her other books, but want to understand why things are the way they are now in the United States and the world for that matter try this book out.

The book's main focus is on how to combat trumpism. But not just resisting--also showing viable alternatives that can be accepted by enlightened people on both sides of the political spectrum.
It also explains the reasons for the general attack on the earth and its people by all of his cronies--especially the fossil fuel promoters and climate change deniers. As usual, it's all about the money. Great read, ending with the "Leap Manifesto", based on caring for the Earth and one another. A noble cause, but corporate and political forces are already entrenched to stop it.

A timely recap of how we've gotten to where we are now politically, socially and environmentally- speaking, and what we can do about it. Naomi Klein is at her best with this book, providing the info you need to know to understand how "this happened" and what we can do as a global community to create positive change for ourselves, for our children and for our children's children.

A book that everyone should read regardless of what side of political debate they sit on, because whether we like it or not we are all in this Together.

This book was written and published at jet speed. There is a reason why we read and listen: to learn and grow. There has always been discord and confusion in the world. Fathers and Mothers disagree with their children yet we need to coalesce this disagreement into action. Ms. Klein is a formidable force of concern and thought. I do not know if I am a neoliberal, socialdemocrat or an egg, but one does know logical clear analysis when presented with it. This book has a lot of people waiting for it, I am almost finished (wife keeps taking it when she can). Hurricane disaster in Houston may be another Shock Therapy and I despair yet hope. This is a call for action not division. READ THIS BOOK.

This is an interesting analysis of current western society and the forces that allowed Donald Trump to become president. Klein draws upon her research for her three previous books (No Logo, The Shock Doctrine, and This Changes Everything) to explain that Trump’s election is not some strange anomaly but the natural result of the society created by neoliberalism over the last 30 years – the brand/consumer culture, the use of shocks and crises to erode citizen rights and the corporate denial of human-caused climate change.

After looking at how we arrived at the current situation, Klein looks at how things could get worse. She then ends on a positive note looking at how things can get better and describes the coming together of different social movements for united action in place of their historically separate silos. The last section of the book contains The Leap Manifesto, created by Naomi Klein and 60 others from a broad spectrum of society and listing the values on which a healthy human society should be based.

The only one of Klein’s previous books I have read is This Changes Everything. While that was an excellent book in terms of its content, I was very disappointed in the quality of the writing. I was often distracted by thinking that I would want to rewrite a paragraph to tighten it up. This is definitely not the case with this book. The writing ranges between good and excellent so none of the message is lost.

This is an excellent analysis of the current state of the world and a positive view of how society could be recreated, if only we had the will to do so. However, I have the lingering fear that neither citizens nor their politicians will exert the effort required, in which case we are doomed.
