"It began on New Year's Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed--and more than half of the world's population was decimated. Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magic rose up in its place. Some of it is good, like the witchcraft worked by Lana Bingham, practicing in the loft apartment she shares with her lover, Max. Some of it is unimaginably evil, and it can lurk anywhere, around a corner, in fetid tunnels beneath the river--or in the ones you know and love the most. As word spreads that neither the immune nor the gifted are safe from the authorities who patrol the ravaged streets, and with nothing left to count on but each other, Lana and Max make their way out of a wrecked New York City. At the same time, other travelers are heading west too, into a new frontier. Chuck, a tech genius trying to hack his way through a world gone offline. Arlys, a journalist who has lost her audience but uses pen and paper to record the truth. Fred, her young colleague, possessed of burgeoning abilities and an optimism that seems out of place in this bleak landscape. And Rachel and Jonah, a resourceful doctor and a paramedic who fend off despair with their determination to keep a young mother and three infants in their care alive"--Provided by publisher.

This is a really good novel. However, there is a moment close to the end...in chapter 23 or 24 made me upset. It wasn’t something I’d expected to happen.....it sucked. But there is also another hope later on.

I stopped reading this book part way through. Not typical of Nora Roberts from my experience. I wouldn’t recommend it.

I made it through 3/4 of the book but just couldn't take any more. So many books and movies are based on the same theme. Too much character development and not enough story. Everyones escape route could have been developed more and made more interesting. Situation scenes were brief when so much more could have been written. Sigh! one star

Nora Roberts is breaking into the post apocalypse dystopian fantasy genre! Her well-practiced writing style makes it flow nice and easy, giving the information you need to involve your mind in any specific scene, without leaving holes or overwhelming extraneous information.
We follow the plague of doom, the crash of modern society, the escape, the rise of the uncanny, through waves of ever-present fear mongers and the forces of evil.

I'm surprised how much I like this book. First Nora Roberts book for me, and I thought it was an easy page turner

An excellent story. Being a Sci-Fi and Fantasy fan, I love Robert's books written in these genres. I've read most of her books and series written in these genres and avoid her more 'normal' books and stories. I also love her Sci-Fi mystery series written under the pseudonym, J.D. Robb with its heroine, Detective Eve Dallas.

This is not the typical tone and timbre of a Nora Roberts story, but the story is so quintessentially Roberts- you are sucked in and invested from the first moment you pick up the book, and all you can say by the end is "I want more!".

Alot of twists and turns but set up to be a great series. Hopefully Lana will make it back eventually to those she grew to love in New Hope!

The story line and characters grabbed right from the start. Not your usual Nora Roberts novel but loved it!!!! Can't wait to read book 2.
