I enjoyed this book, but I think it is best for someone already familiar with the Keto diet. She goes into a lot of depth and presents many different options, which I think for some people could be confusing. She also does not do dairy - so all her recipes are dairy free and honestly a little more complicated than I like to make. Still an interesting read and I like how flexible her approach is. Also this book is geared more towards women.

I don't agree that this a good book for a beginner at ketogenic dieting. The avalanche of information is overwhelming. It could be useful for troubleshooting: weight stalls, medical problems such as thyroid, adrenal, etc. It gives graphs that will help choose the tweaks that she believes will help. Her approach which she calls fat fueled includes a number of carb-up options not consistent with the classical keto guidelines. Therefore, the title is misleading; it could be The Keto Diet and Beyond. Personally, for now at least, I prefer to follow the expert advice for true keto dieting and do not intend to try carbing-up.

Don't get me wrong, it's a delightful book, the wonderful recipes are all low-carb and compatible with the classical keto version, the photos are appetizing and the colourful graphs help to comprehend all the information. All recipes are dairy-free, gluten-free and grain-free and people with some other allergies and intolerances could easily identify the recipes that are appropriate. Although vegan and vegetarian recipes are well identified, there is no chapter of recipes or meal plans specifically for those needs. The recipes provide nutrient information and also macro-nutrient ratios.

Beginners (first 2 weeks) can find simple instructions online such as this list of foods taken from the appendix of the book Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes. Gary Taubes' is not a how-to book, only the appendix is useful for beginners.

Excellent books for beginners include Simply Keto by Suzanne Ryan (which I haven't read yet).

Probably the best introductory book for someone new to ketogenic eating style. A well constructed book detailing keto at a practical level and without the cultish levels of adherence that bar many from transitioning to this type of eating style. The diagrams alone make this book worth a read, they are detailed and informative. This book also embraces that women are something other than smaller men, and that their approach to eating and needs might vary--a glaring issue so transparent that I can it see even as a male. This also pushes beyond the dyed in the wool approach of "as long as I'm under my 20g carb limit I'm healthy" toward sustainable healthy diet whether you remain truly ketogenic or not.

Leanne Vogel has been doing podcasts and blogging in the importance of listening to your body while eating healthful foods for 5 years and is a nutritional coach. Her approach is a fat-adapted style of eating and this book has everything you would need to go Ketogenic healthfully, safely, and with any type of allergy. Being allergic to gluten and dairy, I find her recipes pleasant and enjoyable, but you'll also find vegetarian options, nightshade free recipes, egg free, nut free and nourishing meals. Her podcast (The Keto Diet) and her blog ( are amazing supplemental information for anything that didn't get answered in her book. Plus she's Canadian and answers her emails and Facebook page! Our favourite recipe out of this book is the Flax Muffins, which is child approved since all 3 of my kids absolutely love them!
