During the Great Recession, joblessness exceeds twenty percent East of the Anacostia River in Washington, DC. This documentary follows the intimate stories of Charles, Michael, and James, three long-term unemployed residents struggling to gain employment through 'shovel ready' green projects. When stimulus dollars run out, short term idealism clashes with day-to-day survival in the struggle to find a sense of purpose and place in a recovering economy.

A meaningful documentary story about one of the poorest black areas in the US! It follows several young black men that are working hard to change their lives around for the better! They enlist into the Tree-planting Program in hopes of learning new transferrable skills and get full-time jobs! Some came out of rehab, one came out of prison, etc! Their stories are varied! They desire to move their lives along in a responsible manner, to provide for their families! There is a lot of hope!
The programs that were designed to help them ended up failing them!
These young people need to have lots of perseverance and tenacity to make it: to get a full-time job! Lots of obstacles! And luck is not always on their side, no matter how willing and eager they are!
More people need to see such Documentaries, esp the ones in the leadership and in the community planning, the business owners, the politicians! More needs to be done to help these people who want to do better and just need a helping hand, encouragement and support! Otherwise, we will lose even more young people to drug addiction and dealing! If there are no jobs, and no food on the table, some people are driven to the readily -available illegal work!
And continuous failure and discouragement lead to addiction, also!
