I've always felt ambivalent about Blue Jays' radio broadcaster Jerry Howarth. On one hand, he was the consummate professional. His voice was a harbinger of spring, broadcasting Blue Jays' spring training games long before the first crocus or robin appeared. On the other hand, his relentless positivity and unwillingness to criticize anyone could get tiresome. This chronological recap of his journey from California to the Toronto radio broadcast booth is about what you'd expect: upbeat, always highlighting the positive, and without much in the way of new information. Certainly, no dirt. There's a lot about the 92-93 World Series teams, an equal amount about the recent playoff teams, and not much in the middle. Which is to say that Roy Halladay gets about as much space as Joe Biagini and Mark Eichhorn. Given Howarth's inclination to say nice things about people or say nothing, the absence of even a passing reference to Mike Wilner, part of the broadcast team for over a decade and the current play-by-play guy, speaks volumes.
