In Gilded Age Manhattan, anything can happen... Seeking a wealthy American bride who can save his family's estate, Brandon Fiennes, the duke of Kingston, is a rogue determined to do the right thing. But his search for an heiress goes deliciously awry when an enchanting seamstress tumbles into his arms instead. ...and true love is always in fashion Miss Adeline Black aspires to be a fashionable dressmaker--not a duchess--and not even an impossibly seductive duke will distract her. But Kingston makes an offer she can't refuse: join him at society events to display her gowns and advise him on which heiresses are duchess material. It's the perfect plan--as long as they resist temptation, avoid a scandal, and above all do not lose their hearts.

I found this book to be very sweet. The two characters were very compelling and well flushed out, I especially liked how the talked and listened to each other. While this book is definitely a romance, it isn't always the main focus. Duchess by Design is very focused around Adeline's aspirations and themes of feminism. Which in no way takes away from this book! The Gilded Age Girl's Club is an awesome way to let women do more and be more than the time allowed them to do! This series is representing Girl Bosses is a time when women weren't allowed to do much. Maya Rodale did a fantastic job of setting this story in New York. I look forward to reading more of this series!

Review excerpt: "I really adored so many things about 'Duchess by Design'. I loved the heroine. I loved that she had a circle of female friends who support and protect her. I love the idea of subverting the patriarchy through fashion. I love the fact that this was set among the Four Hundred in Gilded Age New York City.

Where I struggled was the hero. And let me be clear, my struggle was likely reflective of my current mood and tastes as a reader, not of any flaw in the writing. The hero, a duke, spends most of the novel learning to understand what a place of privilege he comes from, and to not take that privilege for granted. That’s a good journey for a hero. My issue is that right now, right in this moment, I have exactly zero patience for men who need to be taught about gender inequality and rape culture by women. And I don’t want to read a romance wherein all that education and labor is performed by the heroine so that the hero can level up to be worthy of her time."

If you're on the fence about this one, imagine a typical historical romance (Dukes! Dresses! Society! Steamy!) set in New York (i.e. non-English accent narrator for my audiobook lovers) balanced out with a helping of headstrong, go-getter, feminist characters. I personally loved the change of location from the norm as well as the focus on the gilded age girls.

First in a new series by this author, who writes historical romances with "a modern wink". A light tone, engaging heroine, and facile resolution.

In some spots, DUCHESS BY DESIGN is wonderful -- the sassy Adeline, the fantastic chemistry of the leads as they dance around their attraction, the Gilded Age/NYC setting, the non-preachy way Rodale addresses the suffragette movement. But it's also set on so flimsy a problem, so easily solved, that the book suffers for it. We know the happy ending is coming, but there are no clever solutions getting us there.

Still, a fun read; light on the physical relationship between the leads, which will make readers looking for more chaste romances happy.
