This is a very Mary Balogh-y Mary Balogh book (a sentence that makes zero sense, but bear with me). It is polite and sort of soothing in the way that I find all of her books to be, and I felt like the hero and heroine were nice people who were also sort of perfect for each other. Which is, of course, the feeling you want to take away from a romance novel! I do think this was one of her more sedate novels – which is just generally the direction she trends towards as a writer, and I say this as someone who genuinely likes her a lot and has read a large portion of her backlist – and it wasn’t as compelling as her best work (see the Bedwyn Saga, THOSE BOOKS ARE SO GOOD), but it was a perfectly enjoyable weekend read, and I’m looking forward to seeing which Westcott family member gets their happy ending next. (Harry? Jessica? Who?)
