Demagoguery, Nazi propaganda, and life in war time Germany are portrayed through the naive eyes of an imaginative, impressionable 10 year old boy. Hard to believe that this movie works, but it strikes the right balance by using caricature and absurdity to convey the evils of fascism, prejudice, and hate. It receives our permission to use outlandish humour by viewing the world through the eyes of a child. Although the movie is identified as a comedy, its satiric tone changes near the end and the story becomes quite heartrending as harsh reality intrudes in the boy’s imaginary world.
