this is perhaps the primary example of Hem's idealization of women. there's a lot to wade through here on the way to the long run on sentence which ends the novel. many at the time classified ernie as a 'realist'---as opposed to a 'romantic' (like fitzgerald) writer. well, i for one think this needs to be revaluated. too bad his marriage to a nearly equally talented martha gellhorn, did not last (both were too busy working, she as a journalist ). i like that 'long run on sentence'. it is a virtuoso effort, and it really brings off the finish, with a bang. unlike other commenters, i will not preview the content 'for you' (against you, against your reading experience). if you skip ahead to check out the sentence, then you ruin the story, and its consequent emotional identification experience (which is why we read fiction).
