I devoured this book in 2 days. It's the 2nd book I've read by this author, and I love her writing. This story contains politics and religion, especially strong at the start, but it's just the background of the story. The narrator is Evelyn, a bright, not pretty, 10 years old girl. She has no dad, but a wonderful single mom. They are at risk, one domino falls and others follow. Evelyn tries to find meaning and stability in religion, but it is her teachers and her own good mind and choices that lift her up and keep her from repeating her mothers' mistakes.
