“Anyone who does anything to help a child in his life is a hero to me. ” “We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It's easy to say "It's not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem." Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.” Though I do not have many heroes, I challenge anyone to look at Fred McFeely Rogers and not see a wonderful role model for both children and adults. Mr. Rogers faced every difficulty, every triumph with love and compassion, always displaying a genuine belief in charity and tolerance. "The World According to Mr. Rogers" compiles a selection of essays that captures Rogers's persona and reminds readers of his warm, caring voice. The collection includes Rogers's acceptance speech from his induction into the Television Hall Of Fame, discussions about courage, lyrics to various songs on his program and a plea to center our society around the needs of children. Always, his message to the individual remains: I am proud of you. You are special. It's ok to be yourself. The book has a straightforward, direct style with few words per page, making it easy to read aloud and enhancing its universal relevance. A fitting tribute to a remarkable human being, one whose advice we can all benefit from following.
