The Afterword in this book explains that many of the tensions in the plot are based on what could have been if society was able to negotiate with Japan to stop the bombing to end WWII. As with all books in this series, it is a complex story with complex characters placed in untenable situations. But underlying the failings of the leaders, there is always hope for redemption and as the last of this series, Ender is redeemed and able to forgive himself. This will be a bridge book for the next characters who are 'born' out of Ender's personality and I am sure they too will be well worth the read. I would however, strong recommend that the books be read in series or this last one will not make any sense.
